Why you're still struggling
You've probably already done the work of understanding. You know where the pain comes from. You might even be able to explain it clearly. But knowing doesn't stop the flashbacks, the hypervigilance, the way your body braces in certain situations.
That's because trauma isn't stored as a story — it's stored as a physical and emotional imprint. Talk therapy alone can't reach it. EMDR can.
EMDR works directly with how your brain stores distressing memories, helping it finally complete the processing it couldn't finish at the time. The memory doesn't disappear — it just loses its grip on you.
Book Free CallHow it works
During EMDR, your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation — gentle left-right movements like eye tracking, tapping, or audio tones. This mimics what the brain does naturally during REM sleep, when it processes and files away the day's experiences.
You focus briefly on a specific memory while the bilateral stimulation runs. Over time, the emotional charge attached to that memory decreases. You still remember what happened — but it stops running your nervous system.
You don't have to talk through your trauma in detail. Many clients find this the biggest relief of all.
Our EMDR team
Most therapists who offer EMDR completed a basic training. At Therapy Cincinnati, EMDR is the clinical specialty the practice is built around.
Our founder holds EMDRIA Approved Consultant status — one of the highest credentials in the field, held by a very small number of therapists in Ohio. He assists at EMDR trainings and supervises other therapists in the work. Every EMDR therapist at our practice benefits from that oversight.
Book Your Free CallWho EMDR helps
If your past is affecting your present in ways you can't think your way out of, EMDR is worth considering.
Single-incident trauma, childhood abuse, complex trauma from repeated experiences.
Infidelity, relational ruptures, the loss of trust in someone you depended on.
When anxiety is rooted in past experiences rather than just present circumstances.
Fear, self-doubt, and relational patterns that trace back to early experiences.
The inner critic that developed as a way to survive, and now won't quiet down.
EMDR adapts well for adolescents navigating trauma, anxiety, and identity.
